About the project – phase 1
As part of the energy-efficient refurbishment of a large company building, LMT Leuchten + Metall Technik GmbH was commissioned to modernise the existing lighting technology.
Following the analyses and specifications of lighting designer Reinhard Vedder, Managing Director of the lighting design office Vedder.Lichtmanagement from Munich, the decision was made in favour of our “office” light inserts with spoon-shaped downlight reflectors, which are perfectly suited for the illumination of work desks with their symmetrical light distribution of 2x 35° and, thanks to their excellent glare control, especially for VDU workstations.
In line with the company’s mission statement, the aim was to minimise energy and resource consumption. The existing luminaires were therefore dismantled and disassembled, and the removed components were recycled by LMT GmbH, which is environmentally certified in accordance with ISO 14001. The existing luminaire housings were then fitted with the customised “office” inserts, including the latest LED technology and innovative light control components, and finally reinstalled in the ceiling.
Equipped with full spectrum LEDs with a light colour of 4000 K and a CRI of 90+, the retrofitted luminaires meet the high requirements of both the customer and the lighting designer: the lighting supports the employees in their demanding visual tasks during small-scale and precise work, and even surpasses the original lighting in terms of its high quality, which Mr Vedder rates to be already an “outstanding lighting architecture”.
The new lighting is energy-saving in many respects: on the one hand due to its precisely controllable LED technology, on the other hand due to the precise use of light where it is needed (in contrast to the previous “scattergun approach”), and last but not least due to the reuse of the existing luminaire housings, which in turn has a positive effect on the budget.

About the project – phase 2
In the further course of the project, a wide variety of luminaires were also replaced in other areas of the building: customer care zones, meeting rooms and many other areas in which outdated but high-quality lighting with the concept of “light modulation” had been installed, were given new, contemporary lighting solutions from LMT. These luminaires were also developed by LMT GmbH according to the specifications of lighting designer Reinhard Vedder: with the help of LMT’s own “lighting tool kit”, various light directing elements can be combined with suitable LED technology and integrated into a housing that is adapted to the installation situation. This enables a flexible and cost-efficient response to any room situation and any lighting concept.
“Although many standard industrial products met the […] requirements of the norms, they did not create a satisfactory, i.e. harmonious and visually pleasant room atmosphere,” summarised lighting designer Reinhard Vedder. The project team’s focus was therefore on the high quality of the light, which not only makes rooms […] bright in accordance with guidelines, but also offers additional benefits for the working atmosphere: pleasant visual comfort with excellent glare control, the best colour rendering index and light that can be controlled flexibly and individually during the course of the day. This resulted in luminaires based on a full daylight spectrum LED with a colour rendering quality of > RA 98, combined with various light directing elements, for example, the “NAU” luminaire with a special downwall reflector, or the “EY! mix” luminaire series with different downlight and downwall reflectors but the same external appearance. “Some carefully developed devices that have been approved in light tests, are real problem solvers for further projects,” says Reinhard Vedder about these luminaires from LMT GmbH, which blend unobtrusively into an existing environment with their reduced appearance without changing the aesthetics of the architecture.

About the project – phase 3
In the third phase of the project, the existing luminaires in the atrium, the stairwells and the exterior of the building were replaced. For the atrium lighting, the outdated spotlights were exchanged with LMT YECTO projectors, each equipped with 4 hybrid optics; the place of the existing linear luminaires was taken over by LED linear luminaires with trough-shaped reflectors specially manufactured by LMT. The stairwells were also fitted with linear luminaires, which were precisely installed into the existing recesses in the concrete slabs.
In the outdoor area, the existing in-ground uplights had to be retrofitted with contemporary lighting technology, which LMT solved by means of a customised lighting insert with a 2x 24,5° reflector for the existing in-ground housings. The outdoor wallwashers on the guide walls of the entrance area were replaced by new LMT lighting inserts with spoon shaped wallwasher reflectors, which fit perfectly into the existing ceiling cut-outs and illuminate the walls evenly and glare-free.
