Frankfurt Airport with modern LED illumination by LMT
The modernization of the driveway area of Terminal 1 has been completed. The aim of Fraport AG was, amongst others, to give the entire access area a bright and friendly look with the help of modern lighting, successfully implemented by LMT Leuchten + Metall Technik GmbH with their energy-efficient luminaires.
Hilpoltstein, 16. June 2016 – On 9 June 2016, Fraport AG reopened the driveway areas of Terminal 1. The extensive modernization of the arrivals level started in spring 2015 and was budgeted at 36 million euros. “Getting the driveway back into operation today not only feels good, it also looks really good,” says Dr. Matthias Zieschang, Chief Financial Officer of Fraport AG, on the occasion of the opening ceremony.
In the past, passengers and visitors were welcomed with the charm of the late 1970s, today the terminal driveway gives the impression of a modern, bright, friendly and clearly structured facility.

144.000 energy efficient LEDs highlight the modern design
A total of 144,000 energy-efficient LEDs were installed at the newly designed driveway area of Terminal 1, whose light visually lifts the ceiling and emphasizes the facade made of glass and metal materials. This enhances the modern and airy character of the the entire area, including the 22 pillars, and underlines and reflects the dynamics of the airport as requested by the client.
The LED lighting systems were delivered by LMT Leuchten + Metall Technik GmbH from Hilpoltstein, whose lighting solutions are already in use in other areas of Frankfurt Airport.
Two light strips with a total length of 950 meters were installed on the ceiling. One of them runs in parallel to the redesigned glass and metal facade and guides visitors into one of the nine entrances with their involute curves. The light strips consist of 3 integrated light components: a variation of the LMT standard luminaire VARYO for direct path lighting, a ceiling brightening by means of a specially developed LED fixture with bent reflector and a wallwasher for facade lighting, which is a variation of the SLOPE.o serial product. In addition, other components such as surveillance cameras, flash lights for fire protection and warning lights for the rescue routes were integrated.
The pigeon protection wires placed on the light strip prevent bird droppings. 120,000 LEDs were installed in the light strips, the light color of which is controlled according to the time of day (circadianely). During the day, the access area shines in cold white light, at night it is flooded in warm white. The installation was carried out by means of 950 hangers on special Hilti adhesive anchors, which were mounted on the ceiling by the specialist team of LMT.
The Nuremberg-based product designer Markus Bischof is responsible for the design of the light strips with their elegant and dynamic appearance. “We have decided to work closely with Mr Bischof on this project in order to be able to offer not only a functionally effective illumination but as well an outstanding and visually appealing solution. The cooperation could not have been better and the result convinced us and our customers to the full extend,” explains Michael Otterpohl, Managing Director of LMT Leuchten + Metall Technik GmbH. Markus Bischof has received several awards in the past for his innovative product creations, including winning the Red Dot Design Award in 2012.
Lighting designer Martin Klingler, who was assigned by Fraport, took also the 22 pillars of the arrival area into the LED lighting concept. Matching the facade design, they were given a base cladding made of brushed stainless steel. Each housing holds 16 YECTO 1R uplights with RGB LED inserts, which allows an accentuated and coloured illumination of the columns. All components of the light strips as well as the uplights on the columns correspond to IP 65 and are controlled by DMX.
“The entree of Terminal 1 evokes now an impression of modern cities, where accessibility, digital information and a reduction in traffic significantly enhance the quality of stay. As a result, the open and friendly welcome culture at our airport now extends visually seamlessly from the apron to the driveway. The first impression that our numerous guests from Germany and abroad get from our airport will be an even more positive one in the future,” as Dr. Zieschang describes.
